Asef Bayat is Professor of Sociology and Middle East Studies at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, and was formerly the Academic Director of the International Institute for the Study of Islam in the Modern World (ISIM), and the ISIM Chair at Leiden University, the Netherlands. His latest book is Making Islam Democratic: Social Movements and the Post-Islamist Turn (2007).
