Ulf Hannerz

Ulf Hannerz has been Professor of Social Anthropology at Stockholm University since 1981 (acting professor 1976-1980). He has devoted himself particularly to urban anthropology, media anthropology and the anthropology of globalization. His field studies have been in the United States, West Africa and the Caribbean, and he has also worked multilocally in Jerusalem, Johannesburg, Tokyo and elsewhere in a study of newsmedia foreign correspondents. He has taught at several universities in Europe, the United States, Asia and Australia, has been the Chair of the European Association of Social Anthropologists (EASA) and Director of the Swedish Collegium for Advanced Study in the Social Sciences (SCASSS), and is a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences as well as the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He was the section editor for anthropology of the International Encyclopedia of the Social and Behavioral Sciences (2001). His work has been published in original or translation in 14 languages.
